In this tutorial we’ll be making a cool block gradient effect. You can use this effect for anything of your choosing, your imagination being the only limit. I’m using a very simple and minimalistic wallpaper to demonstrate.

Step 1

Create a new document, because I’m making a wallpaper with this I’m using 2560×1800px which is the highest widescreen resolution I know of (at the time of writing).

step1

Step 2

Now double click “Background” and rename it to what you like. Then bring up it’s layer styles and add a linear gradient at a -55 degree angle, a scale of 150% with colours of your choice, I went with a dark to medium grey.

step1

Step 3

Now convert the layer we were working on into a smart object, do this by left clicking the layer and clicking “Convert to Smart Object”.

step3

Step 4

Go to “Filter > Pixelate > Mosaic” and set it’s value to 150 as the cell size. Click return and tada! You have a cool block gradient.

step4

Step 5

Now the rest is up to you, add some text, a graphic or leave it as is; Whatever you like. :)
